Baptism, or Christening, is a desire and a commitment to respond to God’s call to follow the example of Jesus Christ. It is also a celebration, a time to come together with family and friends; remembering that you are loved by God, are part of a wider community and have a place with God’s people.
If a child is being baptised then there is a need for at least three godparents, who must have themselves been baptised and preferably also confirmed. It is not essential for the parents to have been baptised. If an adult is being baptised then, while the service is similar, there is no role for parents nor godparents.
